My Debate

Category: accessible Devices

Hellow.
I'm debating which to get, the ipod nano or the vi player? Any ideas? The vi player is made pretty much for the blind and partially sighted and has a radio on it and the ipod nano has a feature for enabling speech on it. Which do people think is better?
Thank you.

IN my opinion: I would go with the Nano hands down. Personally I am simply not a fan of specialized adaptive devices unless there is no alternative. I have a 16 gig Nano and have seen nothing that would make me consider a different device. ITunes is now accessible on both the PC and Mac side and offers a wealth of free and for pay content. The Ipod is extremely small, light weight and easy to use. The battery life is quite good. Get yours today.

Ipod all the way. Like the previous poster said itunes works great, ipod sooo little and the fact that you could carry soooo much music still amazes me hehe.. Agree also with the batery life way better than most mp3 players i've seen.... And the speach on it just makes it way more attractive than it already is so yeah Ipod

I've never heard of this vi player. How much is it? What is it's size?

Personally, the radio part of it would pull me a bit, but it depends on the cost and size as well.

I've recently come across a sony walkman mp3 player. It is small in size, color is pink, and it has a radio. Haven't figured it completely out though. It's adorible!

Hmmmm, I'd say depends on how much music you can put on the vi player. I personally dont like the ipod, even though itunes is accessible, it's still pretty complex! Also my computer does not have the ability to use those sappy5 voices anymore, so I would not be able to use the nano. Well anyway good luck with that!

I've seen the vi player and I wouldn't like to carry it in my pocket because it's bigger than I thought it would be. It does have the ability to store e books and audible and also a photo album, which is no use to me whatsoever. At the same time I know a couple of people who got ipod nanos for Christmas and they said they love it. Does the ipod nano have to be the red one, or does it not matter about the color? Just wondered because it specifically said red in the article I heard.

I agree on the Itunes part, I loved my Nano but switched to Creative's Zen Stone because I want to be able to copy and paste my music directly from PC to player. I've never found myself needing more than 2gb, to be onest, but I think they make a 4gb and 8gb versions and a 16gb model, but it appears to work differently.
I also wonder how good the Sansa players are, they seem extremely reasonably priced andmost of them have an SD card slot (they were selling for $15 for a 2gb version with a slot over Christmas from buy.com).
My problem with Apple in a nutshell is that they always have to put a software layer between you and the source and everything has to go through Apple software, there seem no short cut geeky actions one can do to speed up the process, at least not given my limited experience.
I'm very happy with my 2gb Creative and you can get it for around $20 I believe. Between the two players you mentioned though I'd take IPod over a purely assistive technology baed device, there's no need for one of those, except one that reads text files, which is need, such as the Book Courier and the new Daisy Player from Plextalk, which I am rather excited about.

It does not matter, the red just means they'll donate part of your sale to aids foundation. Me, I'd go with the Ipod Nano.

And what file do they have to have to work on the ipod?

Post 13 by Nick6489 (11 years a Zoner) on Wednesday, 21-Jan-2009 13:29:42

mp3, WAV, m4A. FOr me, the missing link is Ogg, which is while I will never buy an IPod...no Ogg support.

Nick, what do you use for a mp3 player?

Circuit city is going out of business?

Post 16 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 21-Jan-2009 15:35:53

Sounds like the ipod then except 1 or 2?

Post 17 by Nick6489 (11 years a Zoner) on Wednesday, 21-Jan-2009 17:37:19

For a Portable Media player, anything current that supports Rockbox, or a Sandisc Sonsa. I don't have a Portable media player at the moment, but I have an inordinate amount of material in ogg format due to its overall efficiency.

What makes OGG better than MP3 besides smaller file size?

Post 19 by kelly (Zone BBS Addict) on Wednesday, 21-Jan-2009 21:24:24

kelly, where do you get the xplay software? does it really allow you to just copy and paste files onto your ipod?

Post 21 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Friday, 23-Jan-2009 18:45:04

You have to download the software from apple's website. I don't know the address, but you get it when you get quicktime. If you install firefox, you need to install that to hear the sounds of the zone bbs.

Honest, I love saving, so I just rip files from CD's and use the media player on my braillenote that I am borrowing from my school district. See, I get music, and don't waste any money at all, nice, ain't it?

Post 23 by monkeypusher69 (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Sunday, 11-Oct-2009 21:50:18

and that works great till you have to give it back to the school district. lol

Not if you have one from rehab, though. I mean, hell you can even just use one on a Pda or if some of you have a packmate or somethingg, it would still work. My stuff is on .mwas so I can still play them on PDAs if I don't get another braillenote after I graduate.
